Orphanage in Haiti

The Project Manotick for Haiti is helping the Orphanage de la Judée in Gonaives, Haiti.

The orphanage is located in the hurricane belt with frequent storms and flooding. Tropical storm Jeanne struck there in September 2004 leaving a path of destruction in the densely populated city of Gonaives. in 2008 Hurricane Ike destroyed the orphanage. The Orphanage de la Judée lies at sea level and on a fault that is potentially as destructive as the one that recently caused the horrendous destruction in the area of Port au Prince. The orphanage is prone to damage by wind, water and earthquake.

Project Manotick for Haiti is a community project led by Grace Agostinho, owner of the French Cafe in Manotick. Grace and a team of volunteers are working at relocating, rebuilding and outfitting the orphanage to a much safer and secure location on higher ground to the town called Ennery, about 40 kilometers east of Gonaives.

At the moment the orphanage is home for 32 orphans, but because of the earthquake there are more children in needs so they will be taking in more children, bringing the total to 60.

Teddies for Tragedies sent 94 teddies to the orphanage. Mr. Des Garvey, Director, from the Nepean Outreach to the World Organization has driven to Florida with supplies that will be transported by boat to Haiti.
